Washington State Energy Code Help: Homes, ADUs, Additions

The Washington State Energy Code (WSEC-R) sets how well your home must be insulated, sealed, heated, and ventilated before a permit is issued. Build Sherpas builds compliance into your plans, so forms, credits, and drawing details match when you submit. No guessing, no surprise corrections.

What the Energy Code Means for Your Project

Applies to homes, ADUs/DADUs, additions, and remodels

Washington has one of the strictest residential energy codes in the country. It comes down to three things:

Minimum specs: insulation, window performance, and other basics your plans must show.

Energy credits: extra efficiency measures you pick from a menu, like heat pumps, better windows, and extra air sealing. Bigger homes need more.

Testing: most new homes and many additions need a blower door (air leakage) test before final inspection.

Energy Code FAQ

Does my ADU need to meet the energy code?

Yes. ADUs and DADUs are treated as homes, so they need to meet the residential energy code, including credits and usually testing.

Does a remodel or addition trigger the energy code?

Often, yes. Additions generally must meet the code for the new space, and remodels can trigger requirements for the parts you change.

Do I need a blower door test?

Most new homes, and many ADUs and additions, need one before final inspection. Our sister company WA Blower Door handles testing.

What if my plans were rejected for energy code?

Send us the correction letter. We can respond to comments and update your plans, or reach us through the contact form.

Need independent guidance on the whole project?

Our consulting page explains independent help from planning through inspections.
